Jewellery Care

To keep your jewellery looking beautiful for years to come, a little extra care goes a long way. Whether your piece is made from sterling silver, solid gold, or adorned with precious gemstones, here’s how to look after it:

General Care

  • Always remove your jewellery before swimming, showering, or exercising. Chlorine, saltwater, and sweat can dull metal and damage delicate stones.

  • Avoid exposing your jewellery to lotions, perfumes, hairsprays, or household cleaning products, as these can cause tarnishing or damage.

  • When you're not wearing your jewellery, store it in a dry, dark place—preferably in a soft pouch or box to prevent scratches and reduce exposure to air and moisture.

Sterling Silver

Silver naturally tarnishes over time, especially when exposed to air and moisture. Regular wear can actually help slow this process!

  • To clean tarnished silver, gently polish it with a soft silver polishing cloth.

  • For heavier tarnish, use a mild soap and warm water solution, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners, which can scratch the surface.

  • If the tarnish is really bad you can pop your silver into a mix of baking soda and vinegar and rinse well afterwards. Avoid this if you have previous gemstones in your jewellery.

Gold

Gold is a low-maintenance metal, but it still benefits from occasional cleaning:

  • Soak your gold jewellery in warm, soapy water (use a gentle dish soap), then gently clean with a soft toothbrush.

  • Rinse well and dry with a lint-free cloth.

  • Gold is softer than you might think—store pieces separately to avoid scratches.

Gemstones

Gemstones are unique and can vary in hardness and sensitivity, so treat them with care:

  • Wipe with a damp cloth after wearing to remove oils and dust.

  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless you're sure your stone can handle it (some, like opals and emeralds, are too delicate).

  • Keep gemstone jewellery away from harsh chemicals, and store separately to avoid scratching.

With a little attention and care, your jewellery can stay as radiant as the day you bought it. If your piece ever needs a refresh, feel free to get in touch—I am happy to help with professional cleaning and care advice.
